Why therapy?

People seek therapy for many reasons, but what these tend to share at root is a loss of meaning, purpose or direction in life - a sense that something has to give.

Our life-stories shape who we are, yet sometimes they can become stuck and restrictive, reinforcing internal narratives that no longer serve us. Sometimes the language of psychotherapy can itself be overly technical and therefore limiting. It is often by stepping back from what is ‘known’ that therapy can be felt as most liberating and transformative.

Symptoms such as panic, anxiety, depression and destructive habits might be the trigger to seek support. Such experiences can mark a threshold - a crossing into unknown territory, often catalysed by big life events that might bring neglected issues to the surface.

By connecting and working with core feelings in the room, we can explore how past, present, and future projections shape our lived experience. This can help us tend to deeper, less conscious experiences which may be causing ongoing suffering. I find that working with breath, body and imagination is a powerful and effective way of doing so. Grounded in a solid foundation of clinical skills and theory, the healing work of the therapy process can flow.

The approach I take is holistic, and integrates shared wisdoms from relational and embodied understandings of human experience. Personal issues are understood as part of a broader social and cultural context, where these dynamics are understood to shape and influence how we experience ourselves and others in the world. By combining talking therapy with creative exploration and bodywork we can make room for deeper, less conscious experience to emerge. Learn more

Getting started

If you’d like to get in touch about starting therapy, I offer a free 15-20 minute phone call so that we can both better understand how we might be able to work together. If we decide this is a good fit, our first session will be a non-judgemental starting place to explore your needs in more depth.

Getting started can be the biggest hurdle, and the first session can feel understandably daunting. Whilst this is an ‘assessment’ session, it can be helpful to bear in mind that the process of therapy itself will be an ongoing space to re-assess and reflect on your needs as they change and evolve.
